Year 2 - Science - Materials

This term in science we have been learning about materials.

We have identified materials in our classroom. We grouped materials and identified some of their properties.

We carried out scientific experiments. We investigate the question "Are plastic notes longer lasting than paper notes?'

We tested different materials to see if they able to bend, stretch, twist and squash.

In big write we wrote some excellent information texts and then created our own book about materials! Mr Morell was very impressed with them!

Year 2 - Maths - Miss Staples' Marvellous Sweet Shop

Recently in Maths children in Year 2 have been learning about money. They can add money values, investigate coins needed to make amounts and can solve change problems.

Today Miss Staples' opened her Marvellous sweet shop once again. Children became shop keepers and shoppers. As shopkeepers children had to give each shopper a receipt which had the total amount and change. Then had to give the correct coins as change.

We had some Year 5 shop managers keeping a close eye on the shop keepers to make sure they didn't give the wrong change to the loyal shopper.

3AK - Science - Observing and describing different soils

This afternoon, we used our outside learning environment to find two different types of soil. Once we found them we returned to the classroom and observed and described what we had discovered.

Year 6's Science Day!

For National Science Week, the children at Suttons enjoyed learning all about changes in a series of experiments!

Year 6 were investigating what happens when you mix a Berocca tablet with water, and whether the resultant change is reversible or irreversible.

We carefully crushed our Berocca tablet into powder, poured the powder into a balloon using a funnel, squirted water into a test tube using a pipette, put the opening of the balloon over the top of the test tube, then shook the Berocca powder into the water…

As you can see, the water and Berocca mix fizzed like mad! Together they produced so much gas that our balloons began to swell right up! We learned that this is proof that is was an irreversible change, because irreversible changes result in a new substance being created – in this case, gas!

Red nose day 2017 - Friday 24th March

Next Friday at Suttons we will be raising money for Red Nose Day.

The school council have organised some fun events to help raise lots of money!

This year we ask children to WEAR RED for the day.

Also we have decided to have a DANCE MARATHON.

Each class we be dancing non-stop for nearly an hour!
(Please make sure your child is wearing appropriate footwear)

We are asking for a donation of £1 for dressing down and £1 for the dance marathon.

The money we raise will help people living really tough lives in the UK and across Africa. For example, £2.50 could buy a mosquito net to protect a family in Africa. In the UK, £5 could pay for an isolated elderly person with dementia to have dinner at their local support group.

We will also be using Red Nose Day as a learning opportunity to help our pupils explore the issues facing young children across the world, and how the money we raise can help.

We really appreciate your support and hope that you’ll have fun helping Suttons Primary  raise lots of money for Red Nose Day.

3AK - Science Day- King Kong's Hand!

In 3AK, as part of our science day, we utilised our new D.T. room to explore changing states. We changed a liquid (acetic acid (vinegar)) and a solid (bicarbonate of soda) into a gas (carbon dioxide)!

Year 2 Topic - Florence Nightingale

Over the last few weeks Year 2 have been learning all about Florence Nightingale. We have learnt about her life and why she is an important person in our history. We did some fantastic cross-curricular learning. Luckily we were able to show what we have been learning during our class assembly on Friday. The children worked really hard and performed really amazingly! Thank you to all the parents who came to watch!

Here are some pictures of our learning.

To begin our topic children were asked to research Florence Nightingale and create their own poster! We had some amazing posters and children found out lots of interesting facts.

We pretended to be nurses to begin to understand what they do and the type of personality traits you would need to be one.

In dress up in old fashioned clothes and took old fashioned pictures. In the past you did not look at the camera or smile when you had your picture taken.

Florence Nightingale was one of the first women to receive the order of merit. We made our own medals and discussed who we would like to give them to.

In computing we made a timeline of Florence Nightingale's life.

Finally in big write we imagined we was Florence Nightingale and wrote some spectacular diaries. We enjoyed sharing them with you during our assembly!
