Year 6 - World War Two Explorers

 World War Two Explorers

This week, Year 6 have been working extremely hard in our topic lessons - we are learning all about World War II.

Here are some of the things that we did this week:

We created a WWII skyline using the skill of blending colours and creating landscapes using silhouettes.

We created our own propaganda posters to encourage women to join the war effort and take on new roles as men went off to fight.

We baked chocolate cakes using a recipe that was actually written in WWII - influenced by the introduction of rationing.

Year 1 - Space Day!

To end our topic on a 'wow', year 1 held a 'Space Day' on Friday 7th February.
The children came to school dressed in space themed clothes.

In Big Write, we have been reading the story 'Toys in Space'. In the story, the toys land back on Earth after an adventure in space. In the morning the children were visited by some special guests.....

How did the toys get there? What will happen to the toys next? The children wrote their own endings to the story 'Toys in Space'.

The children also completed some space maths!

In the afternoon, the children decorated their own space biscuits and continued to make their rockets!

Thank you to parents/carers for the children's wonderful costumes and to all the adults for their help during the day.

2NL - Coronation Party

To finish our TOPIC on 'How life has changed since Queen Elizabeth came to the throne,' 2NL had a Coronation Day.

First, we designed some healthy sandwiches thinking about including all of our food groups.

Next, we made our sandwiches.

Then, we evaluated our designs and presentation of our plates of food.

After that, we had a class vote to see who would be King or Queen. Florence decided to abdicate. Heidi was next in line along with Charlie and we had a coronation ceremony were they were crowned King and Queen.
They made lots of rules for the class and Mrs Lacey to follow!

Finally, we ate our food, danced and played games at the 2NL Coronation Party.

Year 2 - Meet Florence Nightingale and Mary Seacole!

Yesterday, Mary Seacole and Florence Nightingale visited year 2 (after a very long and tiring evening looking after the soldiers, by candlelight, at Scutari hospital)...

They came with news that the soldiers were dying due to the poor conditions!

Year 2 decided to help the two ladies nurse the soldiers back to health.

First, they designed their blankets in DT lessons, ensuring they were symmetrical.

Then they used felt to create their patchworks

Next, Mary Seacole set them the challenge of researching which herbs would be the best to cure the soldiers of their ailments.

The children then used all of their capacity maths knowledge to create a special medicine to cure the soldiers of their deadly diseases.

However, some soldiers were not so keen to drink their medicine!

The children then visited Scutari hospital to look after the soldiers.
When they arrived it was dirty and unkempt so they set about tidying and cleaning.

They also made sure they washed their hands before the dressed the soldiers wounds.

We also compared the similarities and differences of Mary Seacole and Florence Nightingale, both important and influential ladies of this era.
The children were very impressed by all that Florence had achieved and completed a Timeline of all her significant achievements

At the end of the day, we had a quiz to see just how much we learnt.

The day finally ended with a fabulous presentation of all of the hard work children had completed within the classroom and at home.

Thank you to all of the parents support this term - we hope you and the children have enjoyed learning about Florence and Mary as much as we have?!

Year 4 Colchester Castle Visit

Last Thursday, Year 4 visited Colchester Castle. We were able to visit the city that used to be the capital of England, 'Camulodunum', and one of the three cities that Boudicca burnt down in her rage against the Romans.

Whilst inside the museum we had the opportunity to see Roman armour, the prisons, and recovered Roman artefacts such as doctor's tools and coins.

We also had the chance to build an Iron Age Roundhouse and a Roman Villa which was lots of fun! After that, we were taken down some steep steps and into the foundations of the castle that was built for Claudius, where we learnt lots of interesting facts about Boudicca and the Romans!

All in all, we had a fantastic day! And a great singalong on the coach on the way back! :)
