Science Week - Year 3

Good Foundations - Earthquake Science

We used jelly and cocktail sticks to investigate the best structure for withstanding an earthquake.

The jelly was our foundation and we used the cocktail sticks and mini-marshmallows to make our buildings

To Make it fair

The same person shook all our towers, so we could try to make sure the same force was used each time.

We used a tower of the same height and using the same number of marshmallows toothpicks each time.

We kept the depth of the foundations the same.

Some children wanted to investigate further and know...

What happens if you build a taller tower?
What other foundations could you use?
Can you think of a way to strengthen your tower?

After it was all over we got to eat our designs.
